In a diesel engine, every combustion burn inside the cylinders leaves tiny carbon particles (soot). Your DPF (diesel particulate filter) is like a super-fine sieve that traps that soot, then clears itself by “regenerating” - heating up on a decent run so the soot burns off. Clogs happen when the engine rarely gets hot enough (lots of short trips), or it’s over-fuelling (tired injectors, EGR issues), so extra soot piles in faster than regen can clean it. Over time, non-burnable ash from oil additives also accumulates. The tell-tale signs are poor performance, higher fuel use, and a warning light.
